Being separated from family is a strange kind of hurt.
Sometimes it’s miles. Sometimes it’s an argument nobody knows how to end. Sometimes life just keeps moving, and one day you realize you’ve gone far too long without sitting in the same room.
You can call. You can text. You can see pictures and keep up with everyone’s lives. That helps. But it isn’t the same as dropping by, sharing a meal, or talking long enough that nobody remembers what started the conversation.
The hardest part may be how ordinary it becomes. You get used to saying, “We need to get together soon.” Then another month passes.
I don’t have a clever answer for it. I just know that when you miss someone, the space between you can feel a hell of a lot bigger than the miles on a map.
If there’s someone in your family you want to talk to, maybe make the call. You don’t need a holiday or a perfect reason.
